Sun awning with recessed guide rails.
The current design of the Capri sun protection from Lewens is already 15 years old. After the success of this sunshade it was time for a redesign. To guarantee future success, the Capri has been modernised in many respects and is now more in line with Lewens' current range.
Challenge
As outdoor sun protection, the Capri prevents sunlight from penetrating and the house from becoming too warm. The canopy can be installed in two different configurations: as a pergola or integrated system, making it suitable for large areas and verandas. With recessed guide rails it is the perfect solution for conservatories with hipped roofs or sloping glass surfaces. It was decided to redesign the Capri to make it more compact in all respects, to improve it and to give it a more modern look.
Solution
We came up with the Capri Due: based on its original design, but better! When the Capri Due is mounted above a roof, it protrudes 5 centimeters less than its predecessor. The front profile also protrudes less far compared to the legs. This saves aluminum and makes the product more elegant. In addition, a major improvement is the repairability of the product.
Standard purchase parts that often can break, for example, the cloth roller, the motor and the spring in the guide profile. Designing the housing of these components so that they are easily accessible will make repairs much easier. It is the designer’s responsibility to take this into account during development. But also the aesthetics have been updated; the picture next to here shows the Capri on the left and the Capri Due on the right for comparison.
Result
The Capri’s wall cassette is similar in design to the Portofino sun pergola, so the same parts can be used for both products. This results in less inventory, less energy consumption and costs during production.
Award winning design
When the Capri Due appeared on the market in 2023, it received an honorable mention from the European Product Design Award. The EPDA is an award given to products that improve people’s daily lives.
