Grow lights for grass are indispensable for the maintenance of sports turf. In the absence of recovery time after a match, and with sufficient natural sunlight and warmth, these grow lights stimulate photosynthesis in the grass plant, resulting in plant growth and recovery. With the help of this innovation, stadiums can efficiently guarantee high grass quality all year round.

Challenge

In 2017, we developed the BU50 for SGL: a mobile lighting fixture for the treatment of professional sports fields. Perhaps our largest profile ever made: this 5-meter-long extruded profile housed fixtures capable of treating an area of 50 square meters. However, based on user experiences and market developments, the idea arose to redesign the fixture to make it modular.

During the design of the new system, the requirement was to further reduce the weight in order to decrease pressure on the field and facilitate movement. Additionally, innovations have taken place within the lighting world in the meantime, resulting in more efficient LEDs and drivers, which needed to be guaranteed in a new design.

Solution

By cutting the profile into sections, various configurations can be created with minor adjustments: the LED10, LED30, and LED60. The 1.6-meter-long modules are bolted together; thanks to the profile design, they fit together neatly without any loss of rigidity. The housing can be closed using a snap-on profile, which also allows access to install or repair LED drivers and cables inside the profile. To save weight, the LED fixtures are integrated into the housing, whereas previously external lights were placed in the larger profile. This saves weight and ensures better cooling, resulting in higher LED efficiency. The fixtures can be wheeled onto the field using a retractable handle and can be configured via software on a mounted display and SmartBox.
