Modular glass system.
Since 2011, Lewens' glass roof range has consisted of the Murano Vetro and the lighter variant, the Murano Puro. However, even in the world of glass roofs, there are plenty of opportunities for innovation. Driven by a desire to innovate, the idea for this modular glass system was born to be added to the Murano family.
Challenge
The current Murano glass roof can be ordered in a wide range of dimensions. This modular system has grown over the years but has also shown that it does not meet all market requirements. After all, what if you have a sloping wall on your terrace? We have developed a new system for these garden owners. An even more flexible glass roof with the possibility to create corner segments, without losing the option to integrate existing sunshades such as the Ancona and the Capri into the glass roof. The main challenge within this design process is making the glass roof completely watertight. Furthermore, the facets to which the glass roof is attached are not always level or straight, so this tolerance must be accommodated in the aluminium structure.
Solution
Essentially, all aluminium profiles in this system have been redesigned compared to the original Murano; only the legs have remained the same. The connections have been simplified, creating more freedom in forming shapes with the glass roof. The beam profiles have been optimized so that they can be angled in two directions, yet remain connected to the casing and the rain gutter at all times. The system is fully steplessly adjustable. Because this system must be attached to the wall on multiple sides, making it watertight was the biggest challenge. Different solutions have been designed for each specific situation to achieve a watertight system.
Result
This system has been given the fitting name Murano Modular. The prototype was exhibited in 2024 at the prestigious R+T Stuttgart sun protection trade fair. After the assembly of this first prototype, the final teething problems have been ironed out of the design, and the Murano Modular can be sold to Lewens dealers.
Award winning design
The award was given in the Product Design discipline, Garden category, and crowns the innovative and outstanding design of the Murano Modular. This places it among the best of more than 10,000 entries from 68 countries.
