Simply placing plants on the roof was not an option, due to maintenance. That is why sedum is used: low-maintenance green succulents. “The green sedum roof is a building block for sustainable/climate-adaptive urban development. The roofs help to capture particulate matter, store rainwater and provide cooling in hot weather. In addition, green roofs increase biodiversity in the city. Which is very good for insects,” said alderman Kees Diepeveen at the official opening on Wednesday 24 April.

In addition, 100 bus shelters will be equipped with solar panels and LED lighting and will have a seat made of bamboo.

Placing sedum on bus shelter roofs has only been applied sporadically to date. The municipality of Utrecht is the first to apply this on such a large scale.

Fabrique designed the sedum construction. They did this in a way that this construction can be applied to the existing bus shelters in Utrecht.
