Test, test, test!
It's not a given that a design agency tests its own designs in-house. Often, they create rough drawings of the chosen concept, after which a manufacturer develops it further into a final product. It's possible that the design agency loses sight of the product itself, as the design is already "finished."
However, this neglects a crucial phase of the design process. Besides losing control over how the final product will look, as a designer you also receive no feedback on your work and can’t learn anything from it. Your design on paper is completely different than when you have it in front of you!
One of the most important aspects to test after your design is finished is how the product should be assembled. It’s very instructive to assemble the product yourself. Some things can be made better, smarter, or easier. Design for assembly aims to make the product assembly as easy and intuitive as possible for the assembler.
At Fabrique Invent, we build our own products, several times over. Not because we have nothing else to do, but because we believe it makes us better designers! In addition to our office in Delft, we also have a large workshop where we perform endurance tests, material tests, and UV tests.
