PH5 lamp – Designer: Poul Henningsen
When I think of lighting that perfectly balances form and function, Poul Henningsen’s PH5 lamp immediately comes to mind. Designed in 1958, this iconic lamp redefined the way we experience light. What makes the PH5 so special is its unique arrangement of layered discs, designed to distribute light both directly and indirectly. This results in a soft, even, glare-free light, making it perfect for a variety of spaces. The materials Henningsen chose for the PH5 contribute to its aesthetic appeal. The use of aluminum for the layered discs creates a sleek, modern look and an efficient machining method. -
Swiss Army Knife – Designer: Karl Elsener
The Karl Elsener Swiss Army Knife is more than just a multi-tool; it’s a symbol of thoughtful design and practicality. Elsener’s 1897 design laid the foundation for a multifunctional tool useful not only in military settings but also in everyday life. The choice of stainless steel for the blades and tools makes them durable and sharp, while the characteristic red handle is not only an aesthetic choice but also a convenient sign of quality and authenticity. Swiss precision is clearly evident in the knife’s many functions, ranging from blades and screwdrivers to can openers and tweezers. The use of high-quality materials and meticulous workmanship make this pocket knife a reliable companion in a variety of situations where functionality and portability go hand in hand. -
Flowhive – Designers: Stuart and Cedar Anderson
As a bee lover, a design designed for these beautiful insects is a must. The Flowhive, conceived by father and son Stuart and Cedar Anderson, is an innovation in the world of beekeeping. The design is not only focused on producing delicious honey but also on minimizing disruption for both bees and beekeepers. The technology behind the Flowhive is just as impressive as the design itself. A special feature is the innovative honey frame system. The special honey frame, consisting of transparent plastic panels with a hexagonal pattern, can be opened vertically in rows. By simply flipping a lever, the cells of the honey frame are opened, allowing honey to flow directly from the hive. This unique design minimizes disruption to bees and significantly simplifies the harvesting process for beekeepers, while respecting the natural structure of bees. The transparent panels also allow for observation of the harvesting process without disturbing the hive, making the Flowhive a perfect harmony between technology and natural processes.

Moulton Bicycle – Designer: Dr. Alex Moulton
Long ago, I had the privilege of spending the night at this inventor’s estate. His inventions were displayed in and around the estate, and it was here that “The Moulton Factory” was located. The Moulton Bicycle, designed by Dr. Alex Moulton, is a refined achievement in bicycle design. What makes this bicycle so admirable is its advanced suspension technology. Moulton integrated a suspension system into both the front and rear wheels, creating a smooth and comfortable ride, even on uneven terrain. The use of lightweight materials like aluminum and titanium contributes to the Moulton Bicycle’s signature sleek appearance, while its foldability makes it easy to transport and store. Dr. Moulton’s commitment to innovation has created a bicycle that excels not only in performance but also in design. -
Moka Express Coffee Maker – Designer: Alfonso Bialetti
The Moka Express coffee maker by Alfonso Bialetti is a piece of Italian history in the kitchen for coffee lovers. The octagonal design of the Moka Express is not only aesthetically pleasing but also serves a well-thought-out function. Crafted from aluminum, the design facilitates efficient heat transfer, resulting in a delicious espresso. The percolation method, in which water is forced upward through ground coffee, gives the coffee a rich flavor and creates that delicious crema. The simple yet effective design of the Moka Express makes it not just a kitchen appliance but a symbol of Italian craftsmanship and the art of coffee brewing. The Moka Express is a tribute to the simplicity that can result in an extraordinary experience for the senses.
In my view, these designs are not only functional but also represent the brilliant minds behind their creation. My admiration for the designers and their ability to embrace both form and function only grows the deeper I delve into the details of these iconic products. They have not only earned my respect but also deepened my appreciation for the craftsmanship and creativity behind these timeless designs.
