What are their needs? How do both parties prefer to work? What is expected of us? These are important questions to ask. Once we find a good fit, we can discuss the problem definition and the product to be designed.

The problem could be anything. For example, an existing product no longer meets the target audience’s needs or is too expensive. Or perhaps a new product needs to be designed to solve a problem for the target audience. Based on the problem definition, a set of requirements can be developed that the new design will meet. A key question we always ask here is: how much is expected to be produced? It’s a difficult question to answer at this stage of the design process, but this figure largely determines the design’s success.

The relationship between piece size and production method

The number of units determines the product’s appearance and cost. For example, when a product is produced 100 times, different production methods are more appropriate than when it’s produced 100,000 times. While cutting a sheet metal is more efficient for 100 units, stamping is smarter and more cost-effective for 10,000 units. Casting also suddenly becomes attractive for these larger unit sizes, with the added benefit of greater design freedom for the designer.

Savings

Production methods that require molds or dies, such as injection molding or extrusion, are associated with high start-up costs. However, these production processes often offer lower costs per part, making them suitable for large production runs.

Furthermore, an incorrect forecast can also cause the production price to be too high compared to the sales price. If something is designed for 100 units but is then produced 10,000 times, the costs are significantly higher than if the design had been designed for these quantities. Consequently, little to no profit can be made.

Stay in tune

It’s therefore advisable to carefully study and estimate production volumes at the start of product development. Even if you have a successful product, it’s always a good idea to review the production methods you use. A new or modified design might just improve the quality and cost of your product.

At Fabrique Invent, we’re constantly working to find the right production methods for the right quantities. This applies to both newly developed products and existing ones. Need help determining your market and piece size?
